What Is a Food Co-Op?

More Than a Grocery Store

It’s a community hub supporting food access and community health.

Uproot Market & Eatery is a food cooperative owned and run by its members. Members enjoy certain benefits, but everyone is welcome to shop at the store to meet their grocery needs.

What is a Food Co-op?

A food co-op is essentially a grocery store that is voluntarily owned by the people who shop there and operated for the benefit of its owners.

Unlike a business owned by an individual, family, or corporation, profits from the store return to our owners or are used to help the store better serve our community’s needs. Co-ops follow common principles agreed upon by the international cooperative community, and most have specific values and principles that guide their operations.

Our co-op is focused on:

  • Improving access to fresh and healthy food
  • Educating the community about nutrition and sustainability
  • Benefiting the community by supporting local businesses
  • Assuring Member access to the co-op’s goods, services, and facilities

Why Choose a Food Co-op Over a Regular Grocery Store?

Shopping at a food co-op provides benefits to the shopper, the local food system, and the community.

Shoppers receive access to healthy, fresh foods while supporting local, smaller-scale farm and food service businesses. Co-ops emphasize community involvement, making shopping there a more socially responsible choice. Joining a co-op is a tangible step anyone can take to enrich the community they live in.
